Thomas Erskine, 1st Baron Erskine (1750-1823) – (Erskine Hill)
Thomas Erskine, 1st Baron Erskine, was a Whig lawyer and politician after whom Erskine Hill is named. His legal career was marked by immense success and prominence, as he went on to represent several radical and reformist figures — such as Thomas Paine, a leading American independence writer who had been charged with sedition. One of his most notable cases his successful defence of James Hadfield — who had attempted to shoot king George III. Despite his fortune as barrister, his stint as Lord High Chancellor in the Ministry of All the Talents was unfruitful. Nevertheless, the success of his final case — the defence of Queen Caroline for adultery — gained him widespread recognition in his final years.
