At outbreak of war, 200 Suburb men enrol with Golders Green VTC, to support ‘home defence’. Those eligible for enlistment in regular army are not welcome.

Drill practice in playground of Garden Suburb School. Derided by many and largely ignored by authorities until 1916. Have to buy own uniforms.

Main contributions:

  *  training for youngsters joining regular army
  *  training for those appealing conscription
  *  assisting civil works (e.g. building access road to Handley Page factory in Cricklewood)
