This drawing from 1873 and photo show St Jude's Church and its Vicarage, as well as the photograph displaying the Warden's Lodge of Toynbee Hall. Samuel Barnett was vicar of St Jude's Whitechapel and founded Toynbee Hall with his wife Henrietta.

Whitechapel - Toynbee Hall
​Toynbee Hall, Whitechapel, was set up by Samuel and Henrietta Barnett in 1884 as part of their efforts for social reform. It housed university students and working men together to break down social barriers and for future leaders to be raised with poverty face to face.

The Hampstead Garden Suburb Archives Trust is a registered charity, known as Suburb Archives. It is responsible for ensuring that the archives of the suburb are properly cared for and are accessible to all.

Born in 1844 Samuel Barnett was a clergyman and social reformer, known particularly for his work in creating Toynbee Hall and the origins of Hampstead Garden Suburb, along with his wife Henrietta.

These photos represent Henrietta and Samuel Barnett's time in Whitechapel where he was the vicar of St Jude's. Without their experiences of the harsh poverty in the area they may not have been inspired to create the Hampstead Garden Suburb to help alleviate such cramped and poor conditions.
