Sutcliffe Close is named after George Lister Sutcliffe 1864 – 1915
George Lister Sutcliffe was an influential English architect who contributed greatly to the creation of Hampstead Garden Suburb. A pioneer in the garden city urban planning movement, he is known for his Arts and Crafts architectural style, which prized natural motifs, traditional craftsmanship, and ethical production in design. Having previously worked on the development of Brentham Garden Suburb — the first suburb in a co-partnership housing style to be built in London — he applied his expertise to Hampstead Garden Suburb, assuming the role of its consultant architect in 1914. Sutcliffe was also a notable author, whose publications have influenced British discourse on urban planning and design to this day. The Suburb’s Sutcliffe Close is named in honour of his immense role in its development.
