SIR EBENEZER HOWARD (1850-1928) - Howard Walk.
Sir Ebenezer Howard was the founder of the English Garden City Movement, which influenced urban planning across the world, and thus Howard Walk received its name in his memory. In his book Garden Cities of To-morrow he proposed the founding of ‘garden cities’, each a self-sufficient entity of 30,000 population and ringed by an agricultural belt unavailable to builders. Howard aimed to reduce overpopulation in cities by reversing the large-scale rural-to-urban migration. His vision was that garden cities would be rural districts except with the economic opportunities and the amenities of large industrial cities, each owned by a private corporation. He converted his vision into reality, establishing two garden cities in his lifetime, both in Hertfordshire: Letchworth (1903) and Welwyn Garden City (1920).
