Creswick was born in Sheffield and educated in Birmingham, where he first began to paint. Age 16 he exhibited at the Society of British Artist in London, and sent two canvasses to the Royal Academy. He settled in London and worked as a landscape painter, becoming an associate (1842) and full member (1850) of the Royal Academy at a time with few full members were landscape artists. He was known for painting on the spot rural scenery of a cheerful and calm aspect. Industrious and extremely prolific, he is best-known as a member of the Birmingham School of landscape painters; his career was steady but not exceedingly successful.
