In 1957, the Union put on Thornton Wilder’s Our Town at The Institute which received a glowing review, noting the lack of complicated scenery in the performance but the ability of the actors to transport the audience away nonetheless.
Formed after World War I in 1920 after uniting the Pageant Committee with the indoor dramatic activities of the Suburb, it eventually merged with the Speedwell Players in 1966 to form the Garden Suburb Theatre which is still active now.
Opened in 1909 by Hernietta Barnett the Institute has been at the heart of the Suburb Community for over a century. Dame Henritta believed in the transformative social powers of education and an adult education provider such as The Institute.
