FREDERICK HARRY THOMPSON BIRNIE
Died 31st May 1916, aged 24

 

He died at the sinking of H.M.S. Black Prince during the Battle of Jutland. This ship was heavily shelled and sank within fifteen minutes. There were no survivors, all 857 men were lost. This young man’s home was 30 Temple Fortune Hill and he had been married almost two years to Florence. His name appears on the Portsmouth Naval Memorial and is remembered on the Free Church memorial.
