Walter P. Starmer 1877-1961
Walter Starmer, the painter of the extensive mural scheme in St Jude’s, was a prize winning art student at Norwich and Birmingham schools of art. He had a studio in Mundesley, Norfolk and painted many pictures in the area. He recorded the work of the YMCA on the Western Front during the First World War. Many of his paintings are in the Imperial War Museum. He was also a children's book illustrator, church muralist and stained glass artist. As well as the murals at the church of St Jude-on-the-Hill, Hampstead Garden Suburb - which include a memorial to the sinking of the evacuation ship City of Benares – he was responsible for the extensive scheme of stained glass windows at St Aldhelm's, Edmonton.
