- Conservative member of Parliament from 1984 - 2022.
- Began his career in politics as ‘Minister without Portfolio’, advising the government on issues surrounding unemployment.
- Promoted to Secretary of State for employment in 1985, and subsequently Secretary of State for Trade and Industry in 1987.
- Had a central role in planning Margaret Thatcher’s 1987 election campaign, primarily through organising her tours and television appearances. Was given personal credit for her success.
- Appointed ‘Baron Young of Graffham’ on the 10th October 1984.
- Stood down from his ministerial post on the resignation of Thatcher.
- Published his autobiography, ‘The Enterprise Years’ in 1990.
