- Pioneered works by Elizabethan composers such as Byrd and Orlando Gibbons, at a time when English music was less studied
- Made her debut at Queen’s Hall, London (1914)
- Had affairs with Prime Ministers Lloyd George and Ramsay MacDonald, as well as with composer Arnold Bax
- Badly injured her right hand in 1948, and played one-handed till 1951
