  • Taught as an extramural lecturer at Oxford University
  • Composed orchestral pieces, operas, choruses and songs
  • Awarded the Royal Philharmonic’s Society Prize in 1949 for his ‘Yorick Overture’
  • Served on a number of public bodies, including the Composers Guild of Great Britain, where as a Guild's delegate  he visited the USSR in 1964
  • His opera ‘The Equation’ (1967) reflected his pacifist ideology, which included
  • Support of the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament and the Anglican Pacifist Fellowship
