  • Gained national notoriety by his alleged involvement in the Glasgow 40 Hours' Movement 1919, which culminated in clashes between police and protesters
  • Elected as Labour MP for Linlithgowshire in 1922
  • Served in Clement Attlee's cabinet after 1945 in many roles, including Minister of Fuel and Power, Secretary of State for War and Minister of Defence
